Scene: Interstate Reopens After Gasoline Spill / Reported by Hatzel Vela, Live 5 News
Description: Westbound lanes on Interstate 26 reopened this morning.

For most of the Tuesday night, most lanes were closed after a tanker truck spilled hundreds of gallons of gasoline.

Officials say the driver of a Saturn swerved out of her lane and hit the side of the tanker, which damaged some of its piping and caused the spill south of the 199 exit near Summerville.

The woman driving the Saturn was rushed to MUSC, but officials would not talk about her condition. She was taken by ground, which they say shows she didn't suffer life -threatening injuries.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control was called to scene, shortly after the accident, which happened at around 6 p.m.

Officials feared vapors from the gasoline on the road could cause a potential explosion, so firefighters used foam to keep the vapors under control.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, a second tanker truck arrived on scene and was able to pump out the remaining gasoline.

The gasoline that spilled on the asphalt evaporated, but not before it spread to the nearby soil on the side of the road.

The tanker truck's company, Palmetto Petroleum Transport, hired an environmental clean-up contractor.

The company worked through the night to dig up the contaminated soil, and will have to replace it with new soil.

C&B and Pineridge fire departments were both on scene. The Air Force also helped by providing an additional foam truck. Watch the video here.
